Language has a powerful impact on people's lives and shapes our perceptions of other people. It is important to understand that vocabulary evolves and there is not universal agreement on the definitions of many terms. A good best practice is to ask people what words they use to describe themselves, what it means to them, and how they would like you to use language when talking with or about them.
